Introducing an art hobby into your life can be a great way to follow a passion or interest. Even if you are employed full-time or raising a family, finding time to be creative can be a rewarding experience. If you are new to art and are unsure what medium you will find the most interesting a good place to start is with a trip to your local art shop.

At your local art shop, you can explore the many possibilities for artistic expression. You can learn about the various mediums for drawing, such as graphite, marker, color pencil, pen and ink, and pastels. There are also many different kinds of art paint to choose from. Oil, acrylic, liquid acrylic, and watercolor paints are all very different and require different types of brushes and paper or canvas. Linoleum, wood block, and screen-printing are other art hobbies that some may find interesting as it requires carving or reduction techniques and the printing process.

If you are more interested in a three-dimensional art hobby, hobby shops may provide you with more options than a traditional art shop. There you can find diorama and model kits and other more technical crafts that will still ignite your creativity. These types of hobbies often include the assembly and decoration of the item with paints or enamels and decals.

If all of the choices seem overwhelming ask for help. Art shop employees should be ready to help with any questions and advice when it comes to mediums and technique. Also, art classes at a local university, tech school or community center are good introductions to studio, or practiced, art. Classes that emphasize more specialized art hobbies like book binding and fabrication or photography are also available in many communities.

Finding the mediums that interest you is important. Equally important is finding what subject matters and what styles interest you. By trying realistic, stylized and abstract techniques, you can discover what makes you happy and what direction you want your art hobby to go. Once you start creating, do not forget to share your art and your talent.
